CatholicJukebox.com Starts 14th Year of Streaming Radio
It’s hard for me to believe we started streaming on January , 2000. In internet years, that’s a LONG TIME AGO. And I also know that the only way we have stayed at it this long is by the Grace of God. Very few things have I lasted at for 13 years. I’ve never lasted at a job for more than 8 years. I have been married for 24 years, but that’s another thing that God is leading in my life. And marriage isn’t a job, it’s an adventure!
It was a very different landscape when we first started this endeavor. Catholics weren’t allowed on CCM stations. The playing field wasn’t level, despite the fact that Catholics like John Michael Talbot had started the CCM revolution, we were left out. So a group of musicians chatted online to find a way to get our music heard. Being the nerd of the bunch, I knew that we could get the music heard online, and hearing the music would make the difference. Before CatholicJukebox.com radio, I tried to host sound clips. Artists were a little nervous about hosting the whole song online, where someone could pirate the music. (looking back, wouldn’t that have been nice that someone wanted our music that bad) Then I learned about streaming, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The fact that CJB radio started on Epiphany was only a coincidence, by God’s hand for sure. I also find it amazing that the SQPN name is based on Epiphany as well. Both new media groups trying to be a beacon to help all to find Jesus. I am also grateful that I have been able to work with SQPN, and the wonderful people there. They continue to light the way, and inspire me when I’m not sure what to do next.
Music has changed a lot too. When we first started, bands were popping up all over, Catholic and non-Catholic alike. We were testing the new digital media, being able to record at home with a simple computer. I would get stacks of burned CDs. There was an energy in the community. Newsgroups, forums and chat groups were formed to discuss the music. A little over a decade later, CCM is no longer the fastest growing music industry, websites have shutdown, or slowed to a crawl. Email groups now post rarely, rather than daily. It’s a quieter landscape. But one thing hasn’t changed, God – God never changes. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Faith doesn’t change, and the message doesn’t change. The method sure has changed, be the need is still there for great music, with deep lyrics, bringing an unending truth. Who knows what method of delivery will be next, and who will be a messenger, but the message will still be that the world needs a savior, and under a star that savior was born, He is Jesus.
